KOALA T CARE DAYCARE PROGRAM: Outdoor Learning

We consider the outdoors to be another classroom, and strive to provide quality learning opportunities outside so that children can connect learning with nature and the real world. Children help tend to and pick the garden, sing, dance and act on the outdoor stage, use their imagination hoping from spot to spot on the mulch section, build creations in the sand, ride trikes, sing songs, read stories, write on the chalkboards and much more while learning and playing outside. The outdoors gives children the space and tools to move, run, crawl and jump as they wish. Children spend an hour in the morning and an hour in the afternoon outside – weather permitting.

“Gardening provides different forms of engagement for children, including designing, planting, and maintaining gardens; harvesting, preparing, and sharing food; working cooperatively in groups; learning about science and nutrition; and creating art and stories inspired by gardens.” – Children, Youth and Environments Center for Research and Design (2009).
